A blue velvet ribbon curls around an acorn on the moonlit shop counter.

Near midnight in Felt Presence, the skeletons tucked the ribbon ends into their spools.

One length of blue velvet refused to settle.

“Too much moon,” it said.

They drew the dollhouse curtain across a square of light on the floor. The rest of the moonlight remained, but agreed to speak quietly.

The ceramic pumpkin took an acorn from his waistcoat and placed it beside the restless ribbon.

“For company.”

Soon the ribbon had curled around it.

The skeletons tiptoed away. Behind them came the faintest snore, followed by a smaller one from inside the acorn.
